U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley recently visited Stewart Memorial Community Hospital to discuss the challenges that rural healthcare facilities are facing. On Thursday, Grassley was welcomed by hospital staff and board members, getting a tour of the departments before engaging in a Q&A session, getting first-hand knowledge from those who celebrate the success and challenges seen by rural hospitals. Key topics discussed included concerns about Medicare Advantage, which impacts patient care and provider capacity due to delayed payments and patient care denials, as well as support for obstetrics and mental health services, reimbursement rates, and legislative extenders. Stewart Memorial Community Hospital CEO Linn Block says, “We appreciate the opportunity to show Senator Grassley our facility and speak candidly about the needs and pressures facing rural healthcare. It’s vital that our representatives understand how federal decisions impact our ability to serve patients here in Lake City and the surrounding communities.” For the past 45 years, Grassley has held Q&As in each of Iowa’s counties, allowing him to meet with Iowans and hear about what matters most to them. Grassley says, “The Stewart Memorial Hospital provides the community with high-quality care. I enjoyed touring the hospital and listening to their priorities and concerns. I look forward to bringing their insights back to the policymaking tables in Washington and will continue my work to ensure Iowans get the care they deserve.” Pictures from Grassley’s visit can be found included below.
