One of the holiday season’s longer lasting traditions is back again this year as Carroll County Conservation prepares for the annual Christmas Bird Count. For more than a century, the National Audubon Society has kept track of bird populations throughout the country with the help of volunteers, and Carroll County Naturalist, Matt Wetrich, says the data collected is critical for ornithologists.
Wetrich adds that one of the neat things about the Christmas Bird Count is that anybody can participate, whether they are an avid birdwatcher or just enjoy watching through their kitchen window. He says they have several options for people wanting to participate.
People can also help without leaving their homes.
The count is limited to the same geographic area every year. It’s a 15-mile circle centered on a point just southeast of Lidderdale that encompasses Carroll, Glidden and Lanesboro. Wetrich says getting involved is easy.
That contact information can be found included with this story on our website or by calling 712-792-4614. This year’s Christmas Bird Count is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 22.
