Three bills backed by Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird to protect crime victims, strengthen public safety, and regulate cryptocurrency kiosks have been signed into law. The measures were approved by the Iowa Legislature and signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds earlier this month and were among Bird’s top legislative priorities for 2026. One measure, known as the Victim Protections Bill, allows victims of sexual abuse, including children, to obtain lifetime protective orders against abusers. The law also shortens the time sex offenders have to update registration information with county sheriffs from five days to three and extends the storage requirement for sexual assault kits to 20 years, or for the lifetime of a minor victim. A second law creates tougher penalties for threatening judges or members of the Iowa Legislature and establishes a criminal offense for doxxing public officials with the intent to cause harm. A third measure regulates cryptocurrency ATMs by bringing digital financial kiosks under Iowa’s financial regulatory system and expanding enforcement authority to combat scams targeting consumers.
