The Carroll City Council at-large seat on the ballot this November is one of several contested races for Carroll voters, and a newcomer to local politics, John Lawson, is one of the candidates campaigning for the position. Lawson, who is employed by Alliant Energy, relocated to Carroll with his family five years ago when a position within the company became available. While not a Carroll native, Lawson says he’s from just down the road and is proud to call Carroll home.
He adds that it is natural to want the community you choose to raise your kids in to thrive, and says public service has been important to him, as he previously served as a volunteer firefighter before his move to Carroll. He also frequently volunteers as a coach for his children’s sports teams. Running for city office was the next logical step. Lawson adds he brings a unique perspective to the council, as he can look at Carroll’s strengths and weaknesses with a fresh set of eyes. From issues like housing and economic development, to crime prevention and infrastructure, he says Carroll needs to return to commonsense governance.
Lawson says Carroll has and continues to be one of the best places in Iowa to raise a family, but believes that is becoming increasingly more challenging as tax bills rise. He acknowledges these are largely due to sharp escalations in property assessments. However, he argues city leaders should offset value jumps by lowering levies.
Lawson asks voters to consider him when casting their ballots.
Lawson is running against Jeff Cayler for the at-large seat. Carroll Broadcasting will bring you more from him and other candidates in upcoming newscasts.
