A Denison woman has been ordered to serve a suspended jail sentence in Carroll County District Court for stealing from Sunnybrook Assisted Living. According to court records, 58-year-old Brenda Lee Mercil was seen on March 11 through surveillance cameras entering Sunnybrook’s memory care office, removing $60 in cash from an envelope and leaving. She was taken into custody when she returned for her next shift and transported to the Carroll County jail, where she was charged with fifth-degree theft, a simple misdemeanor. Mercil pled guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 10 days in jail with credit for time served. The term was suspended for a period of 12 months on the condition she pay more than $200 in surcharges, court costs and restitution.
