Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds released a statement today (Monday) in response to the Biden Administration’s proposed changes to Title IX protections. Last month, President Joe Biden outlined sweeping changes to the 1972 law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in public schools and programs. Included in the revised Title IX regulations are new protections for LGBTQ+ students, most notably the addition of transgender students as a protected class. Reynolds says, “By attempting to redefine sex to include gender identity and sexual orientation in Title IX, President Biden is marginalizing girls and women. There are undeniable and important biological differences between males and females. It’s a fact that cannot be denied, no matter how inconvenient it is for the president during an election year. While he caves to the radical left, I will continue to protect the rights of women of all ages. We already have laws on the books to do that. I’ve asked the Attorney General’s office to litigate this outrageous rule that attempts to use federal funds to force our communities to ignore parental rights, due process, free speech, and protected intimate spaces.” Republican Governors Ron DeSantis of Florida and Jim Pillen of Nebraska previously indicated their states would not comply with the new regulations. The revised Title IX rules are likely to face legal challenges.
