Kuemper’s Fall Play Puts Comedic Spin On The Classic Tale Of English Folk Hero, Robin Hood

Kuemper Catholic High School (KHS) theater students are tasked with portraying the story of one of Britain’s most beloved folk heroes, Robin Hood, in their upcoming fall play. Robin Hood and His Merry Men is set in 12th-century England and follows the benevolent rogue and his band of outlaws as they protect the locals from unreasonable tax collections, much to the chagrin of Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. The story of Robin Hood has been recounted countless times, and Josh Tigges, who plays the title character, says their interpretation is a funny and modern take on the classic tale.

The two-hour show includes plenty of humor, a slow-motion fight scene and an intense thumb war. The play’s main antagonist, Prince John, is played by Isaac Meyers, who says the audience will be rooting for Robin Hood as soon as his character is introduced.

Prince John spends much of the play trying to capture the sly outlaws, but his oblivious sidekick, Kevin, played by Michael Schreck, often spoils his plans. In addition to his on-stage role, Schreck has played a large part in the set’s design and creation. On behalf of the entire cast, he gives a big thank you to their friends, family and community for providing materials and labor.

Nearly 40 students are involved in the play, either as cast or crew, and they are all looking forward to finally bringing the show to the stage. According to Kira Parkis, who plays Maid Marian, it is even better with a large audience.

Robin Hood and His Merry Men debuts Thursday, Nov. 7 with additional showings on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9. All performances begin at 7 p.m. at the Carroll Recreation Center. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the KHS office for $6 each or at the door before each show.
