This Is Probably One Of History’s Most Entertaining Rivalries

There have been many famous rivalries throughout history, the Hatfields vs. the McCoys, Coke vs. Pepsi, Tesla vs. Edison, but perhaps one of the biggest rivalries in Iowa is the annual Iowa State University (ISU) vs. the University of Iowa (UI) grudge match on the gridiron. This year’s faceoff is set to kick-off at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 in Iowa City, but fans from both sides will actually be coming together for the sixth annual Rivalry Ride on the Sauk Rail Trail first. Erin Evans, with the Sauk Rail Trail Association, says there is no charge for the ride, which begins with registration at 9 a.m. at Carroll Brewing Company.

Scott Kanne, also with the association, says the Tiger Express food truck will be at the brewery serving up breakfast and other items throughout the day and there will be a bloody Mary bar from Hair of the Dawg Bloody Mary Mix, owned by former Hawkeye basketball player, Mark Gannon. Evans says that this ride is open to everyone, not just those interested in cycling.

Cheers, Gears and Cold Craft Beers is the theme with the starting and stopping point at Carroll Brewing Company. Kanne says there are plenty of other stops and points of entertainment along the way.

Live music will be playing at the brewery after the game. Evans says they do get a good mix of fans at the ride, and they encourage everyone to dress up or decorate their bikes to cheer their team on. They are also selling shirts, with a deadline of Sept. 4. A link for more information, images of the shirts and order forms can be found below.
