SCC Elementary And Middle Schools Marked As “Needs Improvement,” SCC High School Earns “Commendable” Rating

Results were mixed in this year’s Iowa School Performance Report for the South Central Calhoun (SCC) Community School District. Districtwide, SCC students outpaced the state proficiency average in science, but fell short of that same mark for English language arts and mathematics. Data shows 70.0 percent of SCC students were proficient in science, compared to the 67.14 percent state average. As for English language arts, 69.86 percent of students were proficient, nearly four points below the 73.56 percent for the state. SCC was only a couple points off the state average of 70.93 percent in math, with a rating of 68.72 percent. Another area of potential concern in the Iowa School Performance Report for SCC is the chronic absenteeism rate if 16.21 percent, which outpaced the state’s 15.81 percent. The Titans did perform well in the five-year graduation rate metric with 93.55 percent of students completing secondary education, compared to 89.88 percent for the rest of Iowa. Based on the data, education officials have identified the SCC Middle School as “targeted” and for the second year in a row, which will bring additional resources and oversight from the state concerning students with individualized education programs (IEPs). The SCC Elementary school was classified as “needs improvement,” while the SCC High School earned a “commendable” rating.
