At the end of 2016, the Carroll Police Department graduated 139 sixth-grade students from the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program. At the conclusion of their classes, students were tasked with writing an essay that creatively expressed the concepts that were learned over the course of the program. These students talk about the responsibilities they will face in high school, how they can set goals to reach their dreams and about the impact of bullying and how to overcome the scars it leaves. They look at their future and plan ahead on how they will handle peer pressure to drink, smoke, do drugs or engage in dangerous activities and they imagine what it would be like to be placed under arrest for their actions. Some of these winning essays were read during the graduation program, and Carroll Broadcasting has received permission to provide online copies of all first-place winner’s submissions.
