According to Police Chief Brad Burke, the Carroll Police Department closed out Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 in great shape in nearly every way, including crime statistics, staffing, budgets, and more. In his 16 years with the department, Burke says they’ve been fully staffed only a handful of times, and those periods typically lasted only a few months. Fortunately, the Carroll Police Department has not had to hire a new officer since August 2021.
Burke adds this allowed them to finally fill the open patrol sergeant position that had been vacant since October 2020. FY22 was a relatively quiet year in crime as traditional problem areas were all below their five-year averages.
While crime numbers have been lower, the department’s clearance rates are nearly double the national figures in most categories. The total clearance rate for all cases was 67 percent, a three-percentage point increase from FY21. Theft cases, which are some of the most challenging to solve, were cleared at a rate of 29.5 percent, significantly over the 14% national average. From a financial perspective, the Carroll Police Department’s forecasted FY22 budget was $1.96 million, but Burke says their final figures were nearly $330,000 below that mark.
