Iowa District 12 House Representative, Brian Best says a bill that has been debated for several years needs to move forward to keep a nearly 42-year-old initiative alive. When it comes to shoring up can and bottle redemptions in Iowa, there is one key area that he, and other legislators, believe has to be included in the “bottle bill.”
Best says he is not in favor of the contract, he would prefer that the redemption centers get the additional penny. One part of the bill proposes that retailers in communities under 30,000 in population can refuse to take the cans and bottles if a redemption center is within 15 miles.
Best says there are several areas that are now considered redemption “deserts” as there is no place to take the cans and bottles. This is one bill that Best outlines as a priority for this year. He also says there is another piece of legislation that has been brought forward for several years. And though critically important for Iowa’s pharmacies, he is not sure it will gain traction this session.
He says if they don’t address this issue soon, it could have a dramatic impact on the industry across the state.
Representative Best provided a broad overview and answered many of the questions that remain on the permitless carry and voting bills in the interview, the full content of which can be found below.
