Carroll County Solid Waste Management is reminding area residents of the importance of proper battery disposal following an incident at the landfill. Lithium batteries, which are commonly found in consumer electronics like phones or laptops, are prone to igniting when damaged. This situation occurred yesterday (Monday). Fortunately, a staff member witnessed the battery combust and the fire was quickly extinguished by smothering it with dirt. There are many types of batteries, but only alkaline batteries, such as C, D, AA and 9-volt, can be thrown away with other trash. All other types of batteries are considered hazardous waste and must be taken to the recycling center to be discarded safely. For more information on how to properly dispose of different types of wastes, visit www.carrollcountylandfill.com.
