Carroll American Legion Requests Public’s Help In Decorating Vets’ Graves For Memorial Day Weekend

The Carroll American Legion is again seeking the public’s help this Memorial Day weekend to adorn the graves of veterans buried in the Carroll Cemetery with American flags. According to Legionnaire RT Schreck, volunteers will gather at 5 p.m. on Friday on the north side of the cemetery to place individual flags on over 1,400 graves. Schreck says Carroll and the surrounding communities are fortunate to have a strong patriotic streak, and with enough help, it should only take about an hour to get them placed.

Veterans buried in the Carroll Cemetery have served in every major conflict since the Civil War, and Schreck says every American should spend at least a few moments this weekend to honor and remember the nation’s fallen servicemen and women.

Unfortunately, Schreck says it isn’t uncommon for them to miss a grave now and then. He stresses this is never done intentionally, but they do have a prearranged remedy for when this occurs.

Memorial Day services by the Carroll American Legion’s Honor Guard on Monday are scheduled in Lidderdale at the Catholic cemetery at 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the Lutheran cemetery. The parade in Carroll begins at 10:30 a.m. and will go from 1st and Main Streets to the Carroll Cemetery for the annual Memorial Day program. Afterward, the Carroll American Legion is hosting an open house for the public, with sandwiches, chips, and drinks served. Volunteers are also needed at 5 p.m. on Monday evening to collect the flags.
