The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa recently announced it had collected nearly $27 million on behalf of federal taxpayers during Fiscal Year (FY) 2025. The total includes money recovered through civil and criminal lawsuits, restitution ordered for victims of crime, and assets forfeited due to use in criminal activity. The office collected about $2.7 million from criminal actions, nearly $23.6 million from civil actions, and $647,230 in forfeited assets. U.S. Attorney Leif Olson says, “Holding wrongdoers responsible for their actions is a crucial part of our mission. That means making sure that people make good on the amounts they owe to the federal government, especially criminals who’ve been ordered to pay fines and victim restitution. We will continue to work diligently to collect money for the federal treasury and return money to victims of crime.” U.S. attorneys’ offices help enforce and collect debts owed to the federal government and restitution owed to victims. Criminal fines and assessments support the Department of Justice’s Crime Victims Fund, while forfeited assets go to the Assets Forfeiture Fund for victim assistance and other law-enforcement purposes.
