Extensive heat and smoke damage was reported to garage on a house southeast of Carroll after a kid’s toy battery overheated. According to the Glidden Fire Chief Tom Weber, the Glidden and Ralston Fire Departments were dispatched at approximately 11:40 a.m. to a garage full of smoke in the 20000 block of Phoenix Ave. The individual home at the time heard the alarms going off and went to the garage to discover it completely engulfed in smoke. He kept a majority of the damage detained in the garage by shutting the entry way door to the house before exiting the residence and calling for assistance. Weber says a battery for a kid’s toy was charging when it overheated, causing significant smoke but little to no flames. Fire crews were on site for roughly an hour and a half, clearing out the garage. Weber says smoke and heat damage has been reported to the garage, the vehicles, and parts of the living quarters. The Carroll County Ambulance and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene, with the Carroll Fire Department setting up a hydrant station to fill tanker trucks up. Shortly after, the Lidderdale and Glidden Fire departments were dispatched to a combine fire directly north of the structure fire on 170th Street. A hydraulic leak was the cause of the small blaze, with no injuries and minor damage reported. Crews were back at their respective station by 2:18 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
