Bids For Carroll Rec Center Come In A Million Dollars Over Initial Estimate

The City of Carroll opened bids Tuesday for proposed renovations at the Carroll Rec Center and all four of the proposals received came in over the initially estimated $6.7 million construction cost. Badding Construction of Carroll submitted the lowest base bid at $7.690 million. The high bid from Building Crafts Inc. of Red Oak was $8.996 million while the two other bids from Jensen Builders of Fort Dodge and Perry Reid Construction of Lincoln, Neb. at $8.792 million and $7.869 million, respectively. Each company also provided an alternate for about $250,000 in additional work. City Manager, Mike Pogge-Weaver, explains what is included in the base and alternate bids.

With the low bid more than a million dollars over the initial estimate, it is not clear how the city council will want to proceed. Pogge-Weaver outlines several of the paths forward for the Rec Center project.

Pogge-Weaver says the city council will review and discuss the bids during their budget workshop scheduled for tonight (Wednesday) at 5:15 p.m. at Carroll City Hall.

Tonight’s (Wednesday) workshop is the last one on the council’s schedule, but Pogge-Weaver adds it is possible another may be added if more time is needed to finalize the budget. The deadline for cities to submit budget documents to the Iowa Department of Management is March 31.
