DNR Recommends Property Owners Begin Planning For Aquatic Plant Management

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding Iowans it is time to begin managing aquatic plants in ponds on properties they own or manage. According to the DNR, healthy ponds need vegetation, but overgrowth can limit the pond’s use and negatively impact fish populations. Two of the most common management practices are physical removal or chemical control. Mechanical methods include bottom blanketing, dye-based shading, rake and cutter removal or water level manipulation. Herbicide control is achieved by simply identifying the plants you wish to regulate, measure the area you want to treat, determine the proper application amount and timing and check possible restrictions on that body’s use.
