After a tough start the Kuemper girls rebounded to pick up their 3rd win of the season and 2nd in a row. Catherine Mayhall exploded for 31 points hitting 5 three points and was deadly with runners in the lane. Kyndal Hilgenberg came up big with 13 points as the Knights played without second leading scorer Brooklyn Gifford.

Red Oak built an early 8-2 and 12-6 lead before Catherine Mayhall hit back to back 3’s to close out the 1st quarter tying the game at 12. The Knights grabbed their first lead early in the 2nd quarter only to see Red Oak answer and go up 16-14. The Tigers extended the lead to 26-19 before Mayhall and Kyndal Hilgenberg put them up for good. Mayhall drained a 3 to put them up 31-29 and them Hilgenberg knocked down a wing 3 to make it 34-29 and Kuemper would never trail again. Chloe DeVries wasn’t going to let Red Oak go down easy as she hit a pair of 3’s and the Tigers tied the game at 37 at  the end of the 3rd. Kuemper opened the 4th with a 8-0 run. Red Oak again responded cutting it to 4 but Mayhall and Frannie Glynn hit back to back 3’s and Kuemper led by 10 and held on to win.

Catherine Mayhall was very good from late in the 1st quarter on and led the Knights with 31 points and 6 rebounds. Kyndal Hilgenberg added 13 points and 6 rebounds. The Knights dominated the glass with Frannie Glynn pulling down 10 rebounds. Kora Thomsen added 7 rebounds to go with 3 assists on nifty passes.

The win improves the Knights to 3-9 overall and 1-5 in the Hawkeye 10. They will host Clarinda on Tuesday on KCIM.

Ogden at Glidden-Ralston

    The Glidden Ralston Wildcats were able to continue their hot streak defeating the Ogden Bulldogs Monday night. The first quarter was filled with lots of free throws for the Wildcats as Gretchen Wallace would go to the charity line four times, going seven of eight. Wallace would score 11 of the Wildcat’s 13 points. The free throws would keep coming for the Wildcats as they would be brought into the double bonus early by the Bulldogs. The Wildcats would make another five trips to the free throw line going five of 10. Wallace would end the first half with a team high 19 points, leading the Wildcats to a 28-17 lead. Both teams would struggle immensely with turnovers, poor handling of the ball, and turnovers. The Wildcats would use the tallness of Wallace to be efficient from underneath the basket, but would struggle from behind the arc unable to sink any of their threes.

 

The Wildcats would get hot in the second half, cutting down their fouls and draining some threes as well. Wallace and Paige Klocke both sinked threes while Kimberly Daily scored two buckets in the third quarter. The Bulldogs would get the better of the Wildcats in this quarter, outscoring them 12-10. The Bulldogs started to gang up on Wallace and did a good job keeping her to three points in the third quarter. The Wildcats with the 38-29 lead just needed to keep the ball under their control to walk away with a win. Once again, the Wildcats would take frequent trips to the charity strip, making seven more trips going five of 12. Wallace would lead her team in this quarter scoring six of their 12 fourth quarter points. The Wildcats would outlast the Bulldogs and defeat them 50-34.

 

Individually for the Wildcats, Gretchen Wallace would end her night with an impressive 28 point, 11 rebound double-double along with six blocks and three assists. Also for the Wildcats, Morgan Koehler, Paige Klocke, and Kim Daily would score five points, Vanessa Koehler would score four points, and McKenna Schlichte would end her night with one point. The Wildcats improve to 6-5 on the season as the Ogden Bulldogs fall to 0-12.

 

The Wildcats will stay home and welcome the Woodbine Tigers to Glidden on Tuesday, January 19th.
