Westside Fire Department Keeps Decades-Old Easter Tradition Alive By Delivering Easter Packages Saturday

The Westside Fire Department has made some changes to their annual Easter celebration in order to keep the decades-old tradition alive. For nearly 70 years, firefighters in town have hosted an Easter egg hunt for children and families in town. However, gatherings of more than 10 people have been prohibited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so they are flipping the script and using the department’s trucks to instead distribute candy packages to kids at their homes beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. According to Fire Chief, David Slechta, they will be utilizing multiple trucks to reach as many homes as possible, both in town and in the surrounding area. Families are encouraged to wave and say hello to members of the department when they arrive for the delivery but are reminded to maintain the recommended six-foot physical distancing. Only a small group of volunteers will be handling the materials and will be wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the process. To register for a delivery, contact Slechta at 712-830-4217, use the email address included below this story or reach out to any member of the Westside Fire Department.
