This year’s midterm election will, for the first time in the state of Iowa, include school board elections as well. Although city primary candidates had until Aug. 29 to file papers with their County Auditor to be included on the ballot and school board candidates had until Sept. 19, there was also a date of Tuesday, Sept. 24 set as a deadline for those having second thoughts to withdraw. Carroll and several of the surrounding counties have now provided their official lists, and Carroll Broadcasting will bring you details on their elections in the coming weeks. There are several contested races in Carroll County, including for seats on the Carroll Community School District Board of Education. All positions are deemed at-large, so a candidate can reside anywhere within the district. Incumbents who will be running for another term include Jon Sampson, Brad Jorgensen and Karen Friedlein, who was appointed to fill a vacancy left when Gina Badding resigned her seat. Challengers include Onica Ulveling and Cindy Johnson. There have been no challengers to the incumbents with the City of Carroll: Mayor, Eric P. Jensen; at-large Councilman, LaVern Dirkx; Ward Two Councilwoman, Misty Boes; and Ward Four Councilwoman, Carolyn M. Siemann will all run unopposed. Links to interviews with city candidates can be found below. Other contested races in Carroll County include that for an at-large seat on the Breda City Council. Two seats are open with three candidates vying for them: incumbents Michael D. Schwabe and Justin Agan and newcomer, Kayla Tiefenthaler. In Coon Rapids, sitting Mayor, Jeffrey Anthofer is being challenged by Roger Doty, and two open at-large seats are being sought by four candidates: incumbents Jon K. Esdohr and David Burmeister along with Larry Lenz and Jessica Chrystal. The City of Glidden will ask voters to elect three at-large council members out of the five to be included on the ballot: incumbents Gary Schroer and Pat Fay are joined by Martin Danner, Seth Allen Johnson and Ashley Boggs. And the City of Lanesboro will have a race for the mayoral spot with two candidates, the current Mayor, Robert Vernon Main, is facing Jamie Hanlon on Nov. 5. A full listing of Carroll County candidates can be found here.
