The Iowa Board of Medicine filed charges last week against a former Marshalltown orthopedic surgeon accused of professional incompetency and practice harmful or detrimental to the public. Dr. Margaret J. Fehrle is accused of improperly and inappropriately performing surgery from 2008 to 2015 on 18 patients between the ages of 42 and 90 years old. According to the statement of charges, these surgeries caused multiple postoperative complications ranging from serious wound infections to hypertension resulting in a stroke. Fehrle now practices in the eastern Iowa community of Vinton. She has 20 days to respond to the allegations and is scheduled to appear before the Iowa Board of Medicine for a hearing on May 17 and 18.
