Carroll PD Will See New Four-Legged Officer Joining Force In The Next Few Months

The Carroll Police Department will be welcoming a new member to their force soon, thanks to an idea brought to reality by four Carroll High School Sophomores.

Burke says they are now at the point of purchasing the dog and scheduling a five-week training period for the handler, Officer Justin Ferrin. The department spent quite a bit of time researching different organizations that train these type of service dogs.

Burke is talking about Canine Tactical, LLC, managed by Joshua Morton, of Chariton. Morton has extensive experience in canine training through the military and this is a full-time job for him, not a side venture. Burke and the Carroll City Council agreed to enter into a contract with Canine Tactical for the purchase of the dog and the cost of the training along with additional gear and a medical kick bag.

The equipment being put in the cruiser includes an alarm system with a temperature gauge that will automatically open windows, turn on the vehicle and air conditioning and/or pop the doors open in the event of excessive heat. Burke says they expect to receive the Belgian Malinois named Eudoris 3, who was born on Jan. 12 of this year, in November. This will be the third K-9 the Carroll Police Department has had in service. The dog will be housed with his handler, Officer Ferrin. The next fundraiser to help support the ongoing expenses will be the K-9 5K next Saturday, Sept. 23 at Swan Lake State Park.
