Carroll PD Bringing Pets And Owners Together For K-9 5K

Since earlier this spring, when four Carroll High School sophomores came up with the idea of fundraising to bring a K-9 unit back to the Carroll Police Department, many different community organizations and individuals have been working to help them reach their goal. It takes more than $20,000 just to purchase a Belgian Malinois, to train it and to train the dog’s handler; it will take even more money to continue to care for the dog once received. To date, the department is right at that threshold, having raised $20,461.38, but they are continuing to sprint toward their goals with a K-9 5K this fall to benefit the fund. On Saturday, Sept. 23, everyone is invited to bring their favorite canine and join the Carroll Police Department at Swan Lake. Check in will begin at 8 a.m. and the race will start at 10. There is a $25 charge per entry, with children 12 and under participating for free. It is easy to sign up, with registration forms available at the Carroll Police Department website, a link to which is included below. Those bringing pets must register them as well and provide some basic information, including the date of their last rabies vaccination. The rules are pretty straightforward. Pets must be kept on a leash at all times, they must be muzzled if they have previously shown any aggressive tendencies and a waiver and release of liability must be completed before participation. The deadline for entry is at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The police department has identified a dog that is already in training that they will be purchasing later this year. He is expected to be on patrol around the Thanksgiving holiday. Carroll Police Officer, Justin Ferrin, will be entering into a five-week training program on Oct. 23 to be ready for the K-9 unit’s arrival in Carroll.
