UPDATE—Urbandale Officer Killed In Early Morning Shootings Identified As Rockwell City Native

The police officers killed in the early morning ambush-style shooting in the Des Moines area have been identified. Urbandale Officer Justin Martin was killed in the first shooting at approximately 1:06 a.m. at 70th and Aurora. Justin is the son of Randy and Jayne Martin of Rockwell City, who both work for the South Central Calhoun School District. Justin graduated from Rockwell City-Lytton High School in 2011, the year before the schools officially merged. Jayne is an elementary teacher and Randy is principal at the high school. Superintendent of SCC, Jeff Kruse, said the board, administration and staff were deeply saddened when they received the call this morning from Randy that Justin had been lost in the line of duty. He said there is nothing that can prepare you for this situation. Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said the other officer killed in the second shooting that took place at approximately 1:26 a.m. at Merle Hay and Sheridan was Des Moines Sgt. Anthony Beminio. KCCI Television reports law enforcement officials have made an arrest in those shootings. Reports indicate the suspect was captured alive in Dallas County around 9 a.m. Wednesday. Scott Michael Greene was located two miles south of Redfield in Dallas County by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol. Greene was transported to a hospital in Des Moines. Reports indicate Greene was suffering from seizures. Plans for memorials are underway in each of the districts that make up South Central Calhoun, and Kruse said his staff are already discussing ways they can help out at this time. He added the family has been appreciative of the many calls and messages that have come into the district. We will bring you an update on the service and memorial plans for Officer Martin as they become available.
