Sioux City Diocese Hosting Informational Meetings On Potential Abortion Rights Changes

The Sioux City Diocese has announced the second meeting to provide information on the amendment proposal to the Iowa State Constitution regarding pro-life issues. Tom Chapman with the Iowa Catholic Conference (ICC) will be presenting on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the Fort Dodge Corpus Christi Parish Center. In the first meeting, held in Sioux City last month, Chapman explained the ICC is working to educate Catholics and other pro-life supporters about the impact of a recent decision by the Iowa Supreme court that could affect abortion rights in Iowa. A bill passed in 2017 that would stop abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and required a three-day waiting period. Planned Parenthood has since challenged that decision, appealing it to the Iowa Supreme Court, which ruled in their favor and struck it down. “It was a decision, that they found abortion to be a fundamental right in Iowa’s constitution,” Chapman said. The Heartbeat Law passed through Iowa legislation in 2018, but was immediately struck down in district court in June of that same year. A proposed Protect Life Amendment would not ban abortion, but would stop it from being a state constitutional life. The ICC will further explain their pro-life efforts on this amendment on Jan. 30. The meeting is free and open to the public.
