Pheasants Forever Offers Free Feed To Landowners To Offset Harmful Effects Of Harsh Winter On Wildlife

The Carroll County Pheasants Forever Chapter is offering free shelled corn to local residents in an effort to help wildlife that may be struggling to find food due to the unusually harsh weather. According to Kenny Snyder, one of the chapter’s board members, this is only the second time in its 35-year history that the chapter has taken steps to provide supplementary nutrition to wildlife in the winter.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said earlier this month that the heavy snowfall will likely have a negative impact on the state’s pheasant populations. They’ve suggested landowners include a food plot in their pheasant management plans to increase their chances for survival. Snyder says this is their effort to assist all landowners to do their part and encourages anybody with wildlife habitat on their property to take advantage of the offer.

Wagons filled with shelled corn have been placed in the Carroll Bomgaars parking lot and at Spies Fur Company in Manning to allow for people to pick up the feed at their convenience. Snyder adds the chapter will also deliver if landowners are unable to do so themselves, and this can be arranged by contacting him at 790-2660. Several other local chapters have also set up feed stations, and those locations can be found included with this story on our website.
