Self-Defense Expert To Lead Free Classes For Area Women Tuesday At Rec Center

The recent murders of two young women in Iowa have resulted in a renewed interest in safety. The Carroll Police Department has partnered with a self-defense expert, and will be offering free classes to area women, 14 years old and up, this week at the Carroll Rec Center. Police Chief Brad Burke says the instructor feels passionately that women need to know how to use whatever tools they have available to them at any given time.

Burke says the Oct. 2 class is for women of all physical abilities. In order to provide the best training to each attendee, the instruction will be very hands-on.

There is no type of registration required, but there will be a limit placed on the number of people allowed to participate.

The nice thing about the class is that questions can be asked during the training. They will also provide pointers, talking about distractions and what not to do and what to do when running our out on your own. The class is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., but Burke says they will be happy to stay on past that time if the need arises.
