Health Initiative For Underserved Carroll Populations Sees Success, But Future In Question With End Of Funding

For the last six months, Homecare Options and Platinum Fitness have been working together to expand access to healthier lifestyles for individuals with physical and mental disabilities. This health initiative was made possible through support from the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Center for Health, Physical Activity and Disability. The program has helped underserved populations through the availability of personal trainers and health coaching. Kristin Nehring, one of the people who helped bring the idea to life, says it has made a significant impact on the people they serve.

Tony Wernimont, owner of Platinum Fitness, says nine other communities across the nation were chosen to participate in this grant. He says Carroll is unique in the way they have implemented their program.

According to Wernimont, helping these people achieve healthier lives is one of the most rewarding goals he has pursued. He says his business does not benefit financially from the project, but adds they have gained so much more from their involvement.

The pair intends to expand their efforts, but their funding is ending around the start of summer. Nehring says they are working on a way to keep the initiative going.

Both say they are committed to providing these services now and into the future. A video with more information about these efforts can be found included below this story.
