Simple Traffic Stop Escalates To Police Chase In Jefferson Monday Afternoon

An attempted traffic stop in Jefferson escalated into a brief police chase after the driver refused to pull over for authorities. At approximately 3:17 p.m. Monday afternoon, an officer with the Jefferson Police Department attempted to pull over a vehicle with a dirt-covered, unreadable license plate near the intersection of Washington Street and Elm Street. The vehicle, driven by 35-year-old James Michael Lefeber, of Jefferson, refused to stop and attempted to flee. The officer pursued with both lights and audible sirens on until the vehicle stopped in the yard of a residence at 507 North Maple Street. Lefeber entered the home at the address where he was arrested for eluding with speeds 25 mph over the limit, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was also charged with driving while license suspended and failure to maintain registration plates, both simple misdemeanors. Lefeber is currently being held on a $1,000 bond at the Greene County Jail.
