October Was Fourth Wettest On Record

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reporting that this past month was the fourth wettest October on record in the past 145 years. This is not necessarily all bad, according to the report, which shows an improvement in ground water and drought conditions across the state. And, despite a very wet month, there was little flooding that occurred in Iowa. “There are some dry areas in southeastern Iowa, and subsoil moisture has not fully recovered in that part of the state,” says Hyrdrology Resources Coordinator, Tim Hall. He adds that despite that, hydrologic conditions across most of Iowa remain pretty good headed into the winter. The state-wide average rainfall of 5.35 inches last month is nearly double the normal average of 2.74 inches.
