A Murray man has been charged with assaulting a Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office deputy after an incident Sunday afternoon. At approximately 1:30 p.m., a deputy attempted to take Michael Cole Joint into custody at a convenience store in Casey. Joint resisted arrested, injuring the deputy in the process. A nearby good Samaritan stepped in and assisted the officer with detaining the man. Joint was taken to the Guthrie County jail and charged with third offense possession of a controlled substance—methamphetamine, attempted escape from custody and assault on a peace officer, class D felonies. He is also charged with first offense operating while intoxicated, driving under suspension and interference with official acts causing injury, serious misdemeanors, and third degree harassment, a simple misdemeanor. He is being held at the Guthrie County jail on a $5,000 bond awaiting an appearance before the magistrate. Additional charges against Joint are possible. The Adair County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene.
