East Sac Fifth-Grader Convinces Local Authorities To Let Him Bring Back Black Hawk Lake Fishing Tournament

A young man from Lake View, 11-year-old Tate Lahr, is an avid fisherman, going out to Black Hawk Lake nearly every day. About a year ago, he got the idea that he could not only share his passion for the sport, but also bring back a Lake View tradition that was halted in 2012. Lahr decided it was time he started his own fishing tournament.

His mom, Cora, jumped right in, helping Tate go through the proper channels with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the city.

Getting up to speak in front of the various boards and committees was a little intimidating for the East Sac County fifth-grader, but he was determined to go through with his original plan.

He says that most of the people he talked to were pretty excited about the Reel Fun Tournament that will be held Saturday, June 3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with registration at the open shelter house from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. There are no age limits on entering the tournament, and there are some pretty impressive prizes.

Tate says in the future, he would like to host a bass tournament as well. His mom says the entire family, including his twin brother and his two other brothers, are very proud of him for the work he has done to bring fishing tournaments back to Black Hawk Lake. Registration can be done prior to June 3 through the methods included below.
