Four Students Escape Serious Injury In Bus Accident Near Sac City

The Sac County Sheriff’s Office has conducted an investigation into an accident between an East Sac County school bus and a pickup truck that occurred at approximately 4:17 p.m. yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. Sixty-four-year-old Debra Dettman of Sac City was driving the 2015 Thomas school bus northbound on Rolf Ave. and had crossed the eastbound lanes of traffic at Highway 20. She proceeded to pull across the westbound lane, at which time she struck a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 40-year-old August Bach of Newton. Both vehicles ended up in the north ditch. The Sac City Fire Department extricated Bach from the pickup by mechanical means. Bach, his passenger 38-year-old Jennifer Elliott of Cedar Rapids, and Dettman were all transported to Loring Hospital in Sac City by the Sac County Ambulance Service. Four East Sac County students were on the bus at the time of the accident. They were examined by paramedics and released to their parents. Two of the students were transported by their parents to Loring Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Dettman was charged with Failure to Yield from a Stop Sign. There was an estimated $25,000 in damage to the bus and the Bach vehicle was totaled. The Sac City Police Department and a Lake View ambulance also responded to the scene.
