The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has reported that a Bondurant man suffered a gunshot wound while deer hunting in Guthrie County Saturday afternoon. At approximately 2:30 p.m., 32-year-old Shaymus Smith was struck in the right leg by a shotgun slug fired from another member of his hunting party, who were shooting a running deer about four miles north of Stuart. Smith’s wound was not considered life-threatening as it missed bones and arteries. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines for treatment. It is believed Smith was out of the other hunter’s line of site in dense cover. The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa DNR.
