Do Not Pass Go, Go Directly Back To Jail When You Pay Bond With A Phony Money Order

A Storm Lake man who had just been sentenced last week in District Court for Carroll County is now wanted on a statewide warrant, facing additional charges for passing an “altered or fictitious” money order…to law enforcement. Court documents show that 26-year-old Jaime Hernandez was arrested on July 27 for failure to appear for two arraignment hearings on drug charges. The original bond was set at $5,000, but was reduced in mid-August to $1,000 cash or surety, at which time Hernandez presented a money order to the Carroll County jail for the bond. He was released from custody, the money order was deposited and the Carroll County Clerk of Court was issued a check in the bond amount. However, that money order was returned by the bank as a non-valid document. District Court Judge, Joseph McCarville, has since signed an order for the warrant and a bond of $10,000 cash only when Hernandez is taken into custody. Hernandez was sentenced to two, two-year prison terms on Monday, Sept. 16 after entering guilty pleas to charges of second-offense possession of methamphetamine and third-offense possession of marijuana, aggravated misdemeanors. Both of those sentences were suspended and Hernandez was instead placed on two years of probation. He was originally charged with third-offense possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, both class D felonies. Hernandez was arrested by the Manning Police Department near the intersection of Highways 141 and 71 on March 24 after being found in possession of more than a half ounce of marijuana, packaging materials, a scale and a glass pipe that tested positive for methamphetamine residue.
