Fourth-Grader Sells Homemade Snacks And Her Own Toys To Raise Money For The Carroll Library Project

Pictured (L-R): Melissa Nystrom and her daughter, Leah

A young girl from Carroll decided she was going to support the Carroll Public Library project through an impromptu sale last weekend. Leah Nystrom will be a fourth-grader at Adams Elementary and goes to the library at least twice a week to check out books or to just sit and read. She says she was thrilled when she heard Carroll could be getting a new library.

Leah’s family lives just outside of city limits, so they are ineligible to participate in tomorrow’s (Tuesday), Aug. 1 vote. Rather than just give up on helping, Leah decided to set up a table in Southside Park on Friday and Saturday to sell homemade crafts and snacks and some of her toys. Leah says the choice between her favorite possessions and the library was an easy one.

Leah’s mother, Melissa, says she is proud of her daughter’s willingness to support a project she loves so much.

In two days, Leah raised over $200 dollars for the library. She will be keeping her fingers crossed Tuesday evening while results of the vote are being tallied. Also on the Aug. 1 ballot is the election to fill the remaining term of an at-large city council seat. LaVern Dirkx, Matthew Hodges and Ron “Woody” Beyer are campaigning for that spot. Polls open at noon and close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. A list of polling locations is included below this story.
