Construction Season In Full Swing In Iowa; National Work Zone Awareness Week Reminds Drivers, Workers To Be Safe

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is urging transportation agencies nationwide to strengthen work zone safety as construction season gets into full swing in Iowa and beyond. Last week marked National Work Zone Awareness Week, and FHWA data show that work zones pose serious safety risks to both highway workers and motorists. Preventable crashes, fatalities, and injuries still occur each year, highlighting the need for additional training and safety measures. To address the issue, FHWA is implementing a new instructor-led course, Advanced Work Zone Management and Design, geared toward professionals who plan, design, and manage work zones. The effort represents a federal investment of more than $500,000 in resources to states, counties, cities, and construction firms. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), there were 6,639 work zone crashes in the state from 2016 to 2025, resulting in 73 deaths. Speed was a contributing factor in nearly half of those crashes. While National Work Zone Awareness Week may be over, crews will be out all season long, so remember to slow down and pay attention when traveling through construction areas.
