Today (Monday) marks the beginning of Iowa Ag Week, and Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig invites Iowans across the state to join in celebrating farmers and the many workers associated with the industry. Iowa Ag Week runs from March 23 through March 30, and the week coincides with Iowa’s participation in America250, the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of our country’s formation. Naig says, “As we recognize the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, it is important to remember that many of our founders were farmers who understood that a strong republic depends on a strong agricultural foundation. Early Americans fought to defend our freedom and liberty, and for the last 250 years, farmers have helped sustain that republic by producing the food, fuel, and fiber that keep our nation strong. Here in Iowa, agriculture continues that proud tradition every single day. Iowa Ag Week is a great opportunity to celebrate the farm families and agricultural leaders who are helping keep Iowa and America strong.” Iowans can participate by organizing community service projects, holding fundraisers for agriculture-related groups such as 4-H or FFA, hosting potlucks featuring Iowa-produced foods, shopping at local farm stores via ChooseIowa.com, or joining conservation efforts to protect soil and water. Each day of the week-long schedule has a specific focus: service on Monday, National Ag Day on Tuesday, ag celebrations on Wednesday, Choose Iowa on Thursday, Strength of Iowa Ag on Friday, and leadership the following Monday. Naig’s schedule includes two visits to Carroll County this week, and Carroll Broadcasting will bring you more on those planned events in upcoming newscasts.
