Iowa Law Enforcement STEPs Up Presence For St. Patrick’s Day

The Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is urging drivers to plan ahead and avoid impaired driving as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations approach. The holiday often brings increased alcohol consumption and more traffic, which can lead to dangerous driving conditions. According to state data, 148 crashes and five fatalities in Iowa last March involved impairment as a contributing factor. Law enforcement agencies are conducting targeted enforcement efforts, beginning Saturday, March 14, through Tuesday, March 17, to deter impaired drivers. GTSB Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes says, “Planning ahead is essential so that a day of fun doesn’t turn into a tragic event due to one decision. Designate a sober driver, call a taxi, or use a rideshare service. It’s that easy to keep yourself and others safe. If you’re on the road and see a driver that may be impaired, don’t hesitate to call and report it to law enforcement. It could be the call that saves someone’s life.” Officials also remind drivers to watch for pedestrians, as St. Patrick’s Day events often draw large crowds and increased foot traffic in entertainment districts and downtown areas.
