Gov. Reynolds Orders Flags In Iowa To Half-Staff Thursday, Friday For Fmr. Iowa First Lady Ray And Rev. Jackson

Flags in Iowa will be lowered to half-staff on Thursday and Friday this week in honor of former Iowa First Lady Billie Lee Ray and prominent civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson. Flags will be lowered tomorrow (Thursday) from sunrise to sunset in honor of Ray, who was married to the late Gov. Robert Ray. She passed away on Feb. 18 at the age of 97. Gov. Reynolds says, “Billie Ray set a remarkable example of grace, leadership, and service to others. Her work supporting education and community organizations helped shape opportunities for countless Iowans. Billie’s kindness and spirit will be remembered by all who knew her, and her impact on Iowa’s children, women, families, and communities will live on for generations to come.” The order renews Friday from sunrise to sunset for Rev. Jackson, who died Feb. 17 at the age of 84. Reynolds says, “Rev. Jesse Jackson advocated for peace, justice, and equality and helped reframe the conscience of our country. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of Americans.” Flags will be flown at half-staff on the State Capitol Building, on flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
