Dave Pudenz, 72, died peacefully at his home on January 21, 2026.
Dave was born March 30, 1953, to Cletus and Lois Pudenz, the second of seven children. Growing up, Dave developed a love for farming, working with his dad and brothers raising pigs and milking cows.
Dave and Nancy (Thelen) were high school sweethearts and shared the same birthday. They were married on July 29, 1972, and raised their three children – Ryan, Ross and Sara – on their farm east of Auburn.
Dave and Nancy loved to travel across the country to visit historical sites, national parks and family. Married for 53 years, they were a true team in everything they did. Together they built a beautiful farm with a large garden, bountiful fruit trees and a treehouse that generations have enjoyed. On a warm summer evening, they’d often sit outside with a frosty beer and Dave would remark on the “magic of an ordinary day.”
Dave was known for his strong work ethic, which he instilled in his children (at times against their will) positively shaping who they are today. He will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. Dave got the greatest joy from helping his children, and especially his grandchildren, pursue their passions and interests.
Whether it was helping paint an old van IH red for tailgating at Cyclone football games with his family or picking up a bag of sugar and flour at Menards (he always said you could find anything at Menards) to support Madeline’s side hustle, Dave always put his family first.
Dave also was an organ donor and with his death, he will continue to help others. His passing was unexpected, but he would want it to serve as a reminder to cherish each day with those you love.
Dave is survived by his wife Nancy; children Ryan (Angie Hunt) Pudenz, Ross (Hanna) Pudenz and Sara (Dan) Messerich; grandchildren Madeline and Jack Lenz, Taylor and Troy Pudenz, and Hanna, Emma and Claire Messerich, as well as several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by parents Cletus and Lois Pudenz, parents-in-law Math and Philomena Thelen, sister Joleen Pudenz-Daiker, brother Warren Pudenz, and son-in-law Chad Lenz.
Memorial contributions will be directed to charities that were meaningful to Dave.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am, Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake City, Iowa, with Visitation from 9:00 till service time
