The Denison and the Storm Lake Community School District are each recipients of a Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) grant through the Iowa Department of Education. Across Iowa, 28 school districts will receive a portion of the $3.8 million announced today (Tuesday) to develop literacy plans to improve students’ reading proficiency through evidence-based practices implemented from birth through 12th grade. The grant will also support the district’s costs for contracting external literacy consultants, professional development on the Science of Reading for the district’s Literacy Leadership Team, and workshops through the Iowa Department of Education. Both Denison and Storm Lake schools will review data to develop a personalized literacy plan for the district, with an emphasis on assisting students who are reading below grade level and English-language learners.
