The annual Carroll County Pheasants Forever youth hunt is scheduled for this coming weekend, but it is not too late to get signed up for a morning of fun for budding outdoorsmen and women. Chapter President John Danner says the chapter has hosted the youth hunt for around four decades, and many of its current members recall participating when they were children.
The Saturday, Oct. 18 hunt begins at 8 a.m. at the AVAD Hunt Club on Highway 141 east of Dedham. Matt Hosenfelt, who helps organize the event, says families who register for the free program will be treated to snacks, safety education, and, most importantly, guided hunts throughout the morning.
Hosenfelt adds that participants must provide their own shotgun and shells and have completed their hunter education course. Young hunters must also be accompanied by a licensed adult. Danner says not to worry if you are a parent or guardian who has never hunted before, as volunteers from Pheasants Forever would be glad to act as mentors for families new to the sport.
Danner and Hosenfelt say their goal for the youth hunt is to inspire a love of hunting and the outdoors in area youth. Again, there is no cost to participate in Saturday’s Carroll County Pheasants Forever youth hunt, but pre-registration is required by Wednesday, Oct. 15. Signing up is as easy as emailing the required registration forms to office@carrollcountyiowa.org. Those forms are included with this story on our website. Twenty spots are available and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
