Dr. Thomas Laehn, County Attorney for Greene County has officially announced his campaign to run for U.S. Senate and will be hosting a kick-off event this Saturday down in Des Moines. Laehn was raised on a farm in Allison, a small town in Butler County. He is the son of a preacher and school librarian who became a professor and prosecutor, studying, teaching, and applying the U.S. Constitution. He was the first elected to office in Iowa for the Greene County Attorney seat in 2018, winning re-election in 2022. Laehn credits much of his educational and work background that has brought him experience in public service.
Laehn says his decision to run for U.S. Senate was deeply thought about and was inspired by the current condition that Congress and the country is in.
Laehn says that is not the only issue that he will be addressing if elected.
A kick-off event for his campaign will be held down in Des Moines this Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.
Laehn appreciates all those who have signed up to volunteer or have donated to support his campaign. Anyone interested in helping can find more details using the link included below. Laehn is looking to secure the seat opened by current U.S Senator Joni Ernst’s decision to not seek re-election. He currently faces three Republican candidates: Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, former Iowa legislator Jim Carlin and Joshua Smith, a veteran from Indianola. Five Democratic candidates are also seeking election: state lawmakers Zach Wahls and Josh Turek, former Iowa legislator Bob Krause, Jackie Norris, a Des Moines School Board member, and former Executive Director of Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, Nathan Sage. Primary elections are June 2, 2026 with election day Nov. 3, 2026.
