The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education discussed the district’s facility use policy at the last meeting and will look at making possible revisions. Superintendent Dr. Casey Berlau says it was the 2019-20 school year when the facility use policy was last reviewed and updated, which he says makes now a good time to look again and make changes if necessary.
Berlau says there are youth programs throughout the Carroll community that use the district’s facilities who are not associated with the school, including the City of Carroll.
The City of Carroll does contribute to the maintenance for the soccer field, but employees at the school do believe that use of the rest of the facilities is something that needs to be addressed. Questions regarding the policy arose when two youth programs were requesting usage of the Carroll Athletic Stadium for practice/games at the same time. CCSD Activities Director Randy Bissen says the same discussion gets held every year concerning those programs.
The two youth football programs that Bissen is referring to are the Carroll Cardinals and the Carroll Chargers that serve third through sixth grade students at both Kuemper Catholic and CCSD. Bissen says the past few years, the organizers behind the teams have been able to work alongside each other, but some problems were raised this year. Board member Jim Friel suggested that CCSD backs out of this issue completely.
More discussion was had on where the teams could practice elsewhere, not using any CCSD facilities, including equipment, how to establish a fair system of teams getting to use fields for practices and games, plus more. No recommendation was brought to the board and it will likely be reviewed and discussed again in upcoming meetings.
