Iowa State Auditor and current frontrunner for the Democratic Party’s gubernatorial primaries, Rob Sand, held a town hall in Carroll Wednesday evening, addressing around 100 constituents. Sand gathered at 1730 Tap House, welcoming all, regardless of political party affiliation. He says the current political system is broken, saying it showed clearly after the news of the assassination of Conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.
A slogan that Sand recited and is used as a motto for his campaign, “Build an Iowa that’s not bluer or redder, but truer and better.” He gave his history of how he started his career in the Iowa Attorney General’s Office prosecuting most of the state’s public corruption, including the Iowa Film Office tax scandal and the largest lottery scam in American history. Sand ran for State Auditor, being elected in 2018, the first Democrat to hold the office in over 60 years, and was re-elected in 2022, being the only Democrat candidate elected statewide. Sand said his run for auditor was a move to be more proactive, to work together with other state officials to promote good.
Sand reference the “Five Call” Rule” when was asked by a constituent about how to make a change about infringements of Americans’ rights. But he said instead of calling five state officials (2 state senators, one in congress, and state representatives in house and senate) he proposed to make five calls or discuss with neighbors, especially ones that have different views than you to get citizens working together. Sand answered questions on water quality, diversity, and the LGBTQ community, saying that he might not exactly have a plan for everything, but he will work hard everyday as Governor if elected to build Iowa up again.
