Crews have started moving dirt earlier this week for a project Region XII Council of Governments (COG), in partnership with the City of Manning, is completing for a workforce housing duplex. The Manning City Council approved during the Aug. 19 meeting to sign over three city-owned lots located on Iowa Drive in the southern part of the community to be utilized for Region XII to create additional housing opportunities. City Administrator Dawn Meyer says this partnership benefits both Region XII and the city, as Manning was named a 2024 Iowa Thriving Community.
Local Assistance Director for Region XII Chris Whitaker says Region XII has completed several workforce housing projects over the last five years but this is the first one in Manning.
The dirt work started on Tuesday, which Whitaker says makes him hopeful that the building will be available next year.
The Workforce Housing Tax credits was designed to provide tax benefits in refund of sales, service or use taxes paid to the developer during construction to help offset the cost of building more housing opportunities in Iowa communities. The Manning duplex will be a singular structure with two-units that span across the three lots.
