Dennis Walter Green, 64, of Lake City, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 31, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on September 7, 1960, in Sioux City, Iowa, Dennis was the beloved son of Robert Dean and Lula Belle (Walker) Green. He grew up alongside his sister, Diane Simons, and made Lake City his lifelong home, spending the last 21 years living on the family farm where he was raised.
Dennis was baptized at the Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City on April 19, 1973. In 1981, he confirmed his faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Auburn. He later became a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Lake City.
A 1979 graduate of Lake City High School, Dennis was active in nearly every corner of school life. He played football, participated in track and field, sang in choir, played in band, and graced the stage in theater productions—beginning a lifetime of enthusiasm, energy, and determination.
On May 23, 1981, Dennis married the love of his life, Becky (Buse). Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and devotion to their family. They raised three children who were his greatest pride: Shelli Green, Kristi (Patrick) Grace, and Brian (Jessica) Green. Dennis’s joy grew even more with his grandchildren—Leighton, Hudson, and Hayden Grace—whose laughter, hugs, and milestones he treasured dearly. You could often find him cheering loudly at their various sporting events; he was one of their biggest fans.
Dennis worked at a variety of places during his lifetime; a few of those places stand out. He was a very skilled welder for Bowie Mfg. in Lake City and D.A.D. Mfg. in Rockwell City. He saw a dream come true when he owned and operated his own gun shop, What a Blast, in Lake City. For the past 22.5 years, Dennis worked at Evapco, Inc. in Lake View, Iowa, retiring this past January from his role as Traffic Manager. Beyond his career, his true passions were found outdoors. An avid sportsman, Dennis spent countless hours hunting, fishing, and shooting competitively, earning a reputation as an excellent marksman. He was a longtime member of Calhoun County Pheasants Forever, taught hunter education courses for years, and proudly owned and operated What a Blast sporting clays range for two decades. He loved sharing his love of the outdoors with his children, especially his son, Brian, and was rarely without his faithful dog by his side on ranger rides.
Dennis also enjoyed the simple joys of life: cheering (sometimes loudly) for his favorite teams—the Iowa Hawkeyes, Indianapolis Colts, and Oakland Athletics—while convinced that the coaches, players, and referees could hear every bit of his colorful commentary. He loved playing cards with his family, going to coffee with the guys, tinkering in his shop, and spending time with friends and loved ones.
Dennis was known for being a straight shooter who spoke his mind, yet he was also someone with a huge, kind, and caring heart. He would do anything for those he loved and carried his trademark humor and grit until his very last breath.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 44 years, Becky; his children, Shelli, Kristi (Patrick), and Brian (Jessica); grandchildren Leighton, Hudson, and Hayden; his sister, Diane (Ron Berges); and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lula Belle Green, and his in-laws, Everett and Eleanor Buse.
