The Carroll Police Department is once again fully staffed following the recent hiring of three new officers. Police Chief Brad Burke says Carroll is fortunate to be considered an attractive place to work for people in the law enforcement career field, as many departments can take months to fill vacancies.
It has been since 2021 since the Carroll Police Department last had to hire an officer, which Burke says speaks volumes about the community’s support for law enforcement and the culture within the department. He also credits his staff for the added workload while the onboarding process is underway.
Carroll’s newest officers include Tyler Mollhoff, Owen Klocke, and Jacob Michael Smith. Mollhoff was previously employed by the Rockwell City Police Department and has already started picking up shifts for the department. Klocke and Smith are both new to law enforcement and will need to attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA), starting next week. Burke says they have additional training after their certification.
Following their certification, Klocke and Smith will complete a short training stint with local officers before being slotted into the rotation. The roster, which now stands at 16 full-time and one part-time officer, has grown by one following these hires with the addition of a school resource officer, which began with the start of a new school year on Monday. Burke says the initial response has been positive.
Burke says he is optimistic that they won’t need to hire any new officers unexpectedly for quite some time.
